Photo: Antarctic Marine Census Trip Begins



A field of frost flowers appears on newly formed ice in the Ross Sea just off the Antarctic coast.

A major new expedition set sail today for the Ross Sea. Part of both the Census of Antarctic Marine Life and International Polar Year programs, the voyage will help catalog and study the frigid continent's mysterious ocean life.
