Photo: Large Earthquake Has Hawaiian Islands All Shook Up

By the night of October 15, 2006, power was restored to parts of Honolulu, Hawai'i, after a major earthquake had shaken the Big Island earlier that day.

The quake was larger than usual for Hawai'i, perhaps because it was sparked by pressure on Earth's crust, scientists suggest. Most quakes in the island chain, they say, are much less severe and are due to movements of underground magma.
