Photo: Arctic Ice Got Smaller, Thinner, Younger This Winter



Arctic sea ice is shown at its maximum extent during winter 2008-09 in an illustration based on NASA satellite data.

Though the season did not see a record low for ice cover, it did witness the smallest percentage yet of hardy, melting-resistant ice, U.S. officials announced on April 6, 2009.
