February 27, 2008—The U.S. Geological Survey placed the epicenter of Britain's Wednesday morning earthquake—the strongest in nearly a quarter century— about 125 miles (200 kilometers) north of London.

A scientist at the American agency described the quake as "moderate," saying the preliminary U.S.G.S. estimated magnitude of 4.7 would likely be revised upward to match the British measurement of 5.3.
