Photo: Mysterious Ailment Could Wipe Out U.S. Northeast Bats

An undated photo released by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation shows bats afflicted with white-nose syndrome in New York's Hales Cave.

Scientists are hoping that the summer emergence of pregnant females will help them finally identify the cause and extent of the mysterious affliction, which is killing tens of thousands of bats in the U.S. Northeast.
