Photo: China's Pandas Face an Uncertain Future After Quake

Two pandas snack on bamboo at the Bifeng Gorge Giant Panda Research Center in Chengdu, in southwest China, on June 20, 2008. The pandas were transferred to the center after China's May 2008 earthquake.

While immediate post-quake reconstruction plans include rebuilding panda facilities and devastated communities, they do not, to the chagrin of some conservationists, include measures to restore or protect the surrounding bamboo forests that provide refuge for wild pandas.
