Large-scale gene sequencing centers, such as this one at the Broad Institute, a research collaboration between Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University, can rapidly decipher human genomes.

Scientists say breakthroughs in the speed and cost of sequencing techniques will usher in a new era of "personalized" medicine—the detection, treatment, and prevention of diseases based on a person's unique genetic makeup.
