A boy with whooping cough gets medical attention at a U.S. clinic in 1995. The U.S. is experiencing a sharp rise in whooping cough infections, from a historic low figure of around 1,000 cases in 1976 to nearly 19,000 cases in 2004.

The resurgence poses a new threat to babies, as infected teenagers and adults may pass the potentially fatal disease on to vulnerable infants.
