Photo: Australia Grows by a Million Square Miles



Australia, seen here by satellite, has won a ruling from the UN that extends its controlled waters by about 1 million square miles (2.6 million square kilometers).

Officials in the country—whose overland area is about 3 million square miles (7.8 million square kilometers)—are optimistic that rich deposits of oil and gas lie in the new territory.
