Photo: Rare Earthquake Shakes Gulf of Mexico

The strongest earthquake to hit the Gulf of Mexico in 33 years was centered about 330 miles (530 kilometers) southeast of New Orleans, Louisiana, as indicated by the star on the map.

The quake was felt in parts of Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi, but it did little or no damage and was too weak to cause a tsunami. The blue shading indicates that instruments recorded only light shaking in the affected areas.
