Photo: Tree "Mummies" Found, Traced Back to Viking Era

"Mummified" trees—remarkably preserved, but not petrified, for centuries—that date back to the time of the Vikings have been found in a Norwegian forest, scientists announced in October 2009.

This tree "mummy" being examined by a researcher lived from 1334 to 1513.
