Photo: "Warm Plasma Cloak" Discovered Enveloping Earth



The yellow regions of the diagram above represent the warm plasma cloak within the Earth's magnetosphere, the shield that protects the planet from the sun's solar wind. The layer, identified in fall 2008, reminded researchers of a person on a horse, wearing a long cloak.
