Photo: Ancient Gold Center Discovered on the Nile

Rulers of the ancient Nubian kingdom of Kush are entombed in some 50 small pyramids at Merowe (top) in northern Sudan in Africa. Nearby, archaeologists have uncovered grindstones (bottom) and other artifacts from a 2,000-year-old gold-processing center. The site is scheduled to be submerged in 2008 by the new Merowe Dam.
