Photo: Warming Weather Forces Iditarod Changes

Sebastian Schnuelle, from Canada, drives his team past river overflow as he heads toward Nome, Alaska, in the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, on Tuesday, March 15, 2005.

That year, the race trail was changed a number of times, after warm weather caused much overflow on the river and mushers reported water up to their dogs' chests.

Now nearly three years later, the Iditarod is formalizing changes it has made in recent years due to global warming and sprawl.
