Photo: New Seafloor Maps May Bolster U.S. Arctic Claims

New Arctic seafloor data released Monday, February 11, 2008, by the University of New Hampshire and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration show the foot of the continental slope off Alaska is more than 100 nautical miles (185 kilometers) farther from the U.S. coast than previously believed.

Gathered during a recent mapping expedition in the Chukchi Sea, the data could support U.S. rights to natural resources below the seafloor.
