A diagram shows how the U.S. Army's Intelligent Aquatic BioMonitoring System uses bluegill fish to monitor water supplies for terrorist attacks or contamination.

The readily available fish are extremely sensitive to changes in water quality, making them a powerful new tool to complement existing technologies, experts say.
