Photo: African Elephants Avoid Hills, Satellite Tracking Shows



Boone, an African savannah elephant fitted with a GPS collar, was one of many subjects in a years-long study that tracked the animals' movement. Results show that the elephants avoid climbing hills even if the hilltops promise an abundance of food, perhaps because walking up and down the hill consumes too much energy.
