While exploring Hawaii's lava tubes, Northup's team found "a lovely blue-green ooze dripping out of the [cave] ceiling" in the Kano Hina cave system, seen above in January 2008.

The mineral deposit is among several examples of previously unknown microbial waste that have been discovered in caves around the world, Northup said in October 2009.
