Third Place (Tie): Gaspé Peninsula, Quebec, Canada

Winter snows cover a fishing village along the Gaspé Peninsula in Quebec's Gulf of St. Lawrence in an undated picture. Judges for the 2009 "Destinations Rated" scorecard praised the region for maintaining its "authentic Francophone" villages amid a pristine natural landscape.

Although it does enjoy some seasonal tourism, the peninsula is "not a destination on the tip of travelers' tongues--which certainly helps to control numbers and maintain integrity," one panelist said.
