Second Place: Kootenay and Yoho Parks, British Columbia, Canada

These two national parks on the western slopes of the Canadian Rockies are still "essentially wilderness," noted an anonymous panelist for the 2009 "Destinations Rated" scorecard.

Unspoiled sites such as Cathedral Crags in Yoho, seen bathed in evening light in an undated picture, are part of the reason another panelist called the parks "an awe-inspiring destination in summer."

Several of the 437 expert panelists also remarked on the low levels of development in the parks and on their thoughtful management.
