In this "cradle of several civilizations," visitors "will be upset by the giant wall [separating Israeli and Palestinian areas], the intimidating border crossing, and the desolate and hopeless feeling of the city," in the words of two panelists.

Though Bethlehem's ancient attractions continue to draw a trickle of tourists to religious sites, the city's Christian attractions are fairly cut off from the local culture, panelists said.
