44th Place: Grand Bahama Island, Bahamas

Seen from a NASA space shuttle, Grand Bahama looks like a fine place to land. But the independent panelists who rated 133 travel destinations for Traveler magazine call it "cruise ship hell" and a "true tourism folly."

The large island is among the closest to the U.S., and the neighbors have moved in with a vengeance, according to the panel. "Immensely wealthy tourists [mainly Americans] have bought up all the beachfront; developers have built huge, tacky resorts, and there is nothing left for anyone else," one panelist said.
