Ninth Place: Rock With Aesthetic Impact

Geologist Bernardo Cesare at the University of Padua in Italy fiddled with filters, tints, and orientation until he produced this image of the magmatic rock gabbro, magnified five times.

There is no particular scientific significance of the rock, which is chock full of small inclusions of the mineral olivine--"it is just beautiful, in terms of colors and shapes," Cesare said in a statement released by the 2009 Small World Photomicrography Competition
