Eighth Place: Dyed Cotton

A rainbow of stained and colored cotton fibers imaged under 200 times magnification brings focus to the size and shape of the fibers, as well as the cotton's quality, said photographer Lloyd Donaldson.

Donaldson of Scion, a biomaterials company in Rotorua, New Zealand, won eighth place in the 2009 Small World Photomicrography Competition.
