Sixth Place: Fish Scales

Havi Sarfaty, who practices veterinary ophthalmology with the Israel Veterinary Association, makes pictures of anything that sparks his curiosity.

The scales of a discus fish, magnified 20 times under a microscope, won sixth place in the 2009 Small World Photomicrography Competition.

The microscopic view reveals the "beautiful structure and colors of the scale," Sarfaty said in a statement.
