Fourth Place: Ovary Spiral

Developing oocytes, or unfertilized eggs, move along the spiral of an anglerfish's ovary (anglerfish picture and facts) in this winning picture from the 2009 Small World Photomicrography Competition. The walls of the ovary are distinguished with stains added by photomicrographist James E. Hayden.

"Even though it was primarily artistic ... the image could actually be used to demonstrate the [structure] of the ovary and eggs," Hayden, of the Wistar Institute in Philadelphia, said in a statement.
