September 1, 2009--Astronaut John "Danny" Olivas (center) works on the outside of the International Space Station during a space shuttle mission's first spacewalk, which lasted for about six and a half hours. During that time, Olivas and fellow astronaut Nicole Stott (not pictured) removed and stored an empty ammonia tank and retrieved a pair of experimental modules, to be returned to Earth aboard the space shuttle Discovery.

Discovery launched on August 28 for its nine-day mission to the space station, which included installing a new treadmill named for TV comedian Stephen Colbert.
