The gecko species Gehyra koira (pictured) was found in Western Australia state in 2005.

In total scientists have discovered 74 new reptile species in Australia since 1999, according to a September 2009 report.

The discovery of one of the world's most venomous snakes, the Central Ranges taipan, also suggests that many unknown snake species may slither through the Australian outback, conservationists say.
