Locals in drought-stricken Kenya lead cattle to a human-made well in the dried up Ewaso Nyiro riverbed near Samburu National Reserve on August 17, 2009.

The lack of water coupled with existing political and ethnic tensions are likely causes of recent cattle raids in Kenya. Thirty-two people were killed in a raid on September 15 as they sought to replace the livestock they had lost to the ongoing, multiyear drought.
