Greenpeace activists carve a contamination symbol into what they say is a field of genetically engineered maize in southern France on July 27, 2006. The environmentalists were protesting a court ruling that had forced their group to take down maps that purportedly showed the country's commercial, engineered maize fields.

With crop circles now so well known around the globe, new symbols appear all the time, Alexander said. "This year I think we've had more crop circles in the U.K. than just about any year I can remember."
