In 2002 a flower-shaped crop circle materialized overnight in a wheat field in London's Kew Gardens (seen here on September 19, 2002), forcing the garden staff to postpone the harvest.

Though some crop circles are human-made, Alexander said, the unexplainable ones have been attributed to everything from natural phenomena such as whirlwinds to extraterrestrial visitations.

"There are lots of other equally strange ideas," Alexander said. "People talk about earth energies, or think that earth spirits perhaps make them."
