Crop circles covering more than a thousand feet (several hundred meters) of hillside near Badbury Castle in Wiltshire, the U.K., are seen on August 5, 2009.

The strange phenomena tend to pop up near such historic sites, Alexander said. For instance, the region she calls "crop circle central" is littered with Stone Age monuments, including Stonehenge.

The region's combination of history and intrigue has made it a popular tourist attraction. "We get tens of thousands of people coming to the U.K. each year just to look at [crop circles]," she said.
