SPACE PHOTOS THIS WEEK: Shuttle Sparks, Mars Rock, More

July 29, 2009--Dunes ripple inside a small crater in the Noachis Terra region of southern Mars. The dunes face in multiple directions, which indicates that the wind changed its strength and direction many times as the dunes were being formed.

The picture above is part of a larger image of the crater recently taken by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. Another closeup of the same dune field shows the dark tracks of dust devils that had skittered across bright bedrock exposed near the dunes.
