Sinfa, Taiwan, August 13, 2009--In the aftermath of Typhoon Morakot, a Taiwanese soldier helps rescue villagers via an emergency cable strung where a 20-story-high bridge used to be. The bridge was done in by the same flash floods that took the lives of at least 32 Sinfa residents.

Across Taiwan, the typhoon killed at least 108 people and spurred a 38,000-strong rescue effort, the New York Times reported.
