A Perseid meteor darts across the skies over Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, on August 10, 2002.

The Perseids are debris left behind by comet Swift-Tuttle, which last passed by Earth in 1992.

American astronomers Lewis Smith and Horace Parnell Tuttle discovered the comet independently a few days apart during the U.S. Civil War in 1862. With a 133-year orbit, the celestial body is expected to appear again in 2125.
