SPACE PHOTOS THIS WEEK: Cosmic Knots, Mars Rover, More

July 2, 2009--Telescopes that can see in various wavelengths of light can offer different views of the bursts of high-energy gamma rays coming from the galaxy M87, 50 million light-years from Earth. But previous images couldn't show exactly where in the galaxy the bursts originate.

Now radio data from the National Science Foundation's continent-wide Very Long Baseline Array (bottom right) have provided enough fine detail to show that the powerful emissions are coming from a region close to the supermassive black hole at the galaxy's center.
