Elbe Valley, Dresden, Germany

The Elbe Valley region of Germany, including the city of Dresden, was removed from the World Heritage List by UNESCO in June 2009 because a four-lane bridge is being built through the valley.

The valley's delisting is only the second to occur since the list was established in 1972.

The region had originally been listed as a cultural site in 2004. UNESCO warned Dresden that it could be delisted for building the bridge as early as June 2007, according to the UNESCO Web site.
