Java, Indonesia, May 25, 2009--Miners carry baskets of yellow sulfur from the crater floor of the Ijen volcano complex.

An active vent at the edge of a lake has made sulfur production a major industry in this area of Java. Miners face cloth-dissolving acid and life-threatening vapors for an average wage of U.S. $11 a day.
