A hoopoe holds a bug snack in its beak in Hortobágy National Park in Pusztaszer, Hungary, in May 2008.

The "very eager" bird often visited photographer Markus Varesvuo in his 13-foot-high (4-meter-high) hiding place to check out the competition—its own reflection in the hide's window pane, Varesvuo wrote in his blog.

"It is a beautiful bird to watch and admire. And photograph," wrote Varesvuo, who took this picture during the Wild Wonders of Europe project.
