Photographer Sven Zacek captured this "fairytale winter landscape" in Kuusamo, Finland's Riisitunturi National Park in February 2009. (See a map of the region).

Despite working so far north during winter, Zacek had good shooting conditions: "I caught myself several times stopping my work in amazement of the light," he wrote on his blog.

The Wild Wonders of Europe images "demonstrate that even here in Europe, there are still many undisturbed areas of natural beauty—and that our efforts to preserve them are paying dividends," WWF International Director James Leape said in a statement.
