"Most Famous" Roller Coaster

The 1920s were a golden age of coaster construction that saw the rise of many legendary rides. But none were more revered than New York City's Coney Island Cyclone, which opened in 1927.

"It's the most talked about and most famous coaster of all time," said ultimaterollercoaster.com's Gieszl. "It really stepped up the thrills when it was built."

Though it was nearly torn down in the early 1970s, the now protected, and city-owned, landmark still sends a thrill down many a spine--and it had better: A spin on the Cyclone today costs 8 dollars, versus the original 25 cents.
