COSMIC BLOB PICTURES: Galactic

An artist's representation released in June 2009 shows a complete view of a cosmic blob, which surrounds a spiral galaxy in a haze of bright red.

The blobs are so far away that their light is reaching Earth from a time when the universe was only about two billion years old, or roughly 15 percent of its current age, the astronomers said.
