Gourma, Mali, May 19, 2009--A stricken juvenile elephant gets much-needed water in the West African country of Mali, where the worst drought in 26 years has endangered a rare herd of desert elephants.

The group of up to 450 elephants--one of the northernmost herds still remaining in Africa--are forced to trek longer distances within the Sahel region to find scarce water, according to the conservation group Save the Elephants.

Six elephants have already been found dead.
