PHOTOS: "Jupiter's Ghost," Galaxies Mark Skywatch Event

The irregular galaxy NGC 55 was the subject of a newly released image taken by the La Silla Observatory in Chile, run by the European Southern Observatory (ESO). The galaxy lies about 7.5 million light-years from Earth.

ESO was the main organizer for Around the World in 80 Telescopes, which kicked off on April 3, 2009, at 9 a.m. UT. The event ended 24 hours later at the Palomar Observatory in Pasadena, California.
