ITALY EARTHQUAKE PICTURES: Historic Towns Damaged

An earthquake in central Italy flattened the dome (center) of the Anime Sante church in the town of L'Aquila on Monday, April 6, 2009. The capital of the Italian region of Abruzzo, L'Aquila has suffered strong quakes before.

Though the town dates back about 800 years, most major buildings were built in the 1800s following a damaging 1703 earthquake.
