Third Place, Marine Animal Portraiture

A close encounter--just over six feet (two meters) away--allowed Australian Steffen Binke to capture this winning picture of a dwarf minke whale at the Great Barrier Reef, a prizewinner in the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science's 2009 amateur underwater-photography contest.

A smaller form of minke found only in the Southern Hemisphere, the dwarfs grow to about 21 feet (6.5 meters) long and are hunted for their meat. (more minke whale pictures).
