This nose ornament, carved from obsidian, was found during excavation of the El Palmillo site.

Obsidian, a form of volcanic rock valued for its strength and durability, was an important resource for ancient Mesoamerican cultures including the Zapotec and Maya.

All obsidian in the pre-Hispanic Valley of Oaxaca had to be imported from volcanic sources hundreds of miles away.
