Archaeologist Gary Feinman (standing, center) excavated the grandest of several palaces atop El Palmillos hillside settlement, with support from National Geographic's Committee for Research and Exploration.

The palace at this site was remodeled several times by successive occupants from A.D. 500 to 900.

At its largest, it measured about 6,500 square feet (600 square meters) and included perhaps 20 rooms with three outside patios. One (upper left) included the entrance to the tomb.
