The Zapotec were pioneers in the use of agriculture and writing systems. They built Monte Albán, one of the earliest cities in the Americas.

They were also gifted ceramic artisans. Archaeologists found dozens of ceramic vessels such as these buried in a rare unlooted tomb beneath a hilltop palace at El Palmillo. Originally these may have been filled with food and drink for the journey to the underworld.
