Beneath a palace, in a tomb where Zapotec nobles buried their dead, archaeologist Gary Feinman holds an urn showing the rain god Cocijo.

"I was relieved we'd been able to excavate it from its context intact," Feinman recalls.

In the Zapotecs farm-based economy, Cocijo was a vital force. Experts believe Zapotec nobles dressed up as the god to try and ensure a good harvest.
